Silicon Line Announces the World’s Most Power Efficient 12.5 Gbps Dual Channel Transceiver IC using only 34 mW per Channel

April 5. 2012 – Silicon Line today announced that it has brought to market the SL82352 the world’s most power efficient 12.5 Gbps dual channel transceiver IC for applications

Silicon Line today announced that it has brought to market the SL82352 the world’s most power efficient 12.5 Gbps dual channel transceiver IC for applications including optical Thunderbolt and other high-speed active optical cables.

Silicon Line GmbH, a leading provider of ultra-low power analog ICs, today announced that it has brought to market the SL82352, an ultra-low power, multi-rate, high performance VCSEL (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser) driver and TIA / LA (transimpedance amplifier / limiting amplifier) transceiver IC optimized for power critical optical data transport applications. The IC combines two VCSEL drivers and two TIA / LAs into a single IC and is suitable for various transmission standards. Implemented in standard CMOS using Silicon Line’s world leading ultra-low power design architectures, the IC consumes a total of less than 34 mW per channel at 12.5 Gbps. Including typical VCSEL modulation currents an entire optical link based on SL82352 would consume less than 50 mW per channel. This corresponds to below 4 pJ per bit.

“Silicon Line already has a broad range of ultra-low power ICs designed for connecting high resolution cameras and displays within mobile consumer devices which have demanding low power consumption requirements”, says Ian Jackson, Senior Manager Sales and Marketing at Silicon Line. “The SL82352 builds on this foundation and extends our ultra-low power technology into the active optical cable market”, he added. “As data rates go ever higher there is an increasing demand for low power consumption for active optical cables in the consumer and datacenter markets. SL82352 answers these demands”.

Silicon Line has an extensive portfolio of leading edge, ultra-low power and cost effective VCSEL drivers and TIAs, including 3 Gbps, 6 Gbps and 12.5 Gbps single, dual and quad channel chipsets. The SL82352 dual channel 12.5 Gbps transceiver is Silicon Line’s latest addition to its rapidly expanding product portfolio.

The device supports an ultra-wide range of data rates from 20 Mbps to 12.5 Gbps and requires only 34 mW of power per channel at 12.5 Gbps. In sleep mode SL82352 consumes less than 4 µW of power. It has an integrated temperature controller which automatically adjusts the VCSEL currents depending on ambient temperature. Burn-in and diagnostic modes are also available.

The integrated TIAs have a low input referred noise which enables a BER of 10-12 at 12.5 Gbps for an input current of 20µApp.

SL82352 is ideally suited for a wide range of applications including optical links for Thunderbolt and other high-speed
active optical cables, 10G Ethernet and Fiber channel.

SL82352 is available as bare die.
