Silicon Line announces availability of an
ultra-low power chip set for optical HDMI® cables

4-Channel x 3.4 Gbps ICs are powered by the HDMI® cable

Munich, Germany, July 30, 2010:
Silicon Line GmbH, a provider of ultra-low power analog ICs, today announced that it has brought to market an IC chip set for the optical HDMI® market.

The chip set consists of a pair of ICs, a transmitter and a receiver. The SL82828 is a 4
-channel VCSEL driver with each channel supporting up to 3.4 Gbps. The SL82818 is the corresponding TIA / LA. In keeping with Silicon Line’s design philosophy of ultra-low power, the devices can be powered using only the energy provided by the HDMI® interfaces and so need no additional external power supply.

The ICs can be directly connected to the TMDS I/O signals on the HDMI® / DVI connectors and are
compatible up to the HDMI® version 1.4 as used for AV transmission. They are fabricated using standard CMOS technology and require no external components, so enabling cost effective optical cable implementations. Due to their extremely small form factor, they can easily be integrated into the cable.

"HDMI® is the AV connection method of choice in the consumer market. Blu
-ray players providing Full HD are widespread. The trends for 3D, higher TV screen resolution (Quad HD) and increased color bit depth are all driving the need for the high speed AV transmission which HDMI® enables", said Holger Hoeltke, Managing Director at Silicon Line. “However, due to the high transmission speeds required, electrical HDMI® cables are restricted in their length to a relatively short distance. For those applications which require longer distances an optical cable is the preferred solution. Compared to copper cables, optical cables can extend for 100m or more without needing amplifiers or repeaters. The SL82828 and SL82818 provide a simple and cost effective way for manufacturers to implement optical HDMI® cables", Hoeltke added.

Applications include home theater systems, digital FPDs, PDPs and projectors in conference rooms and auditoriums, digital display systems and kiosks with FPDs.

The chip set can also be used for optical DVI applications.

The SL82828 as well as the SL82818 are sampling now and are available in bare die form.
